Nationalism in education

Class Room

We have to differ nationalism from patriotism. Each nationality needs patriotism. If not, the country does not have significance to exist.

Our ancestors took a wrong course in education after the victory in Chine-Japanese war and Russo-Japanese war. Especially, their arrogance towards Asian people produced hostility among them. Education emphasized these feelings nation-wide.

Prewar-educated ministers used to show typical consequences of the education when they refer to Japanese postwar duty toward Asian countries. They often make a slip of tongue. This is because they do not think what Japanese empire did in China, Korea, and other Asian countries were wrong. One says, "Yes. Our troops ADVANCED (*they escape the word "INVADE" usually) into Asian countries to free them from Western colonialism. However, as a result, we contributed to declaration of their independence after war." Other one says, "Japan did not want to open the war. But the situation then forced us to go."

Prewar education influenced them too strongly. Even their slogan towards non-Asian countries changed from " Kichiku Bei-Ei (nasty USA and UK)" to " Shin-Bei Han-So (pro-American and anti-Soviet)," their views towards Asian countries still remain unchanged.

We have to know more about what totalitarianism-dominated Japan did internationally and domestically.

On August 15th, the Defeat Day, Japanese TV stations broadcast many Special Programs, however almost all of them are produced from viewpoint of "Japanese as injury." For example, they broadcast such scenes as Tokyo Air Raid, the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Gyokusai Scene in Saipan, nonetheless Japanese troops killed more Asian people in Main China, Indo-chine, Philippines, Indonesia and other battlefields.

We have to teach true objective history to our children, so that we can keep our children from prejudiced historic view, such as "There was no slaughter in Nanking." Luckily, our generation can hear live voice from people concerned. It must be the time to write down, now.

I don't think to teach nationalistic view in classroom is wrong, as long as it is based upon facts. If it contains framing up or lies, it should be rejected immediately. Because these fabrications won't have any positive effect.
